Municipalities across the Kenora and Rainy River Districts are getting $2.6 million to help cover the costs associated with COVID-19.
Greg Rickford is the Minister of Northern Development and Mines and says the funding is part of a recent four billion dollar announcement made by the provincial government.
Rickford says the it’s really a flexible funding envelope for communities to identify their priorities.
The Kenora-Rainy River MPP notes the investment is not only for what the towns have already spent, but what it’s going to cost in the months ahead.
“This will allow them to take the necessary precautions at arenas and municipal buildings, basically municipal assets. I want governments to get back to work.”
Rickford adds municipalities are already spending money on software for virtual meetings, purchasing Personal Protection equipment for workers and installing plexi-glass for municipal buildings.
Dryden has been promised $433,400 and is getting another $15,770 to support transit operations.
Ignace is accepting $92,100, while Machin is on the receiving end of $82,500, with another $15,273 pledged to support local transit initiatives.
Rickford recently made the funding announcement in Kenora.
