It’s been one week since Red Lake residents were told to leave their homes in light of a dangerous forest fire.
That prompted municipalities across northwestern Ontario to accept evacuees and provide them with food and lodging.
Ear Falls Mayor Kevin Kahoot says he’s proud of their community response in assisting displaced residents.
“You couldn’t ask for a better group of volunteers and a better community. When the call went out for the evacuation on Monday night, people immediately stepped up.”
Kahoot says municipal staff came in ready to work and businesses opened in the middle of the night for evacuees.
He notes the Legion also played a big part in providing meals.
“They also provided a place for people to gather and talk with each other and visit and make sure their other loved ones were safe. The Legion did a remarkable job for us in Ear Falls.”
Kahoot adds the community and regional response just proves when your neighbour is in trouble, we all step up to help.
Red Lake Fire 49 has been contained and residents are allowed to return home.
