The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says its making strides on Red Lake Fire 49 and there was limited spread Tuesday.
Information Officer Chris Marchand says warm, dry and windy conditions continue but notes wet weather is expected to enter the area Thursday or Friday,
“Firefighters are hoping forecasts for lighter winds will allow them the chance to limit the fire spread in the direction of the town site of Red Lake as well as Highway 105. And it’s seen some good progress in their efforts so far.”
At 12:00 Wednesday the fire was mapped at 750 hectares in size.
Marchand says they are aggressively attacking the blaze.
“Water bombers, up to eight helicopters bucketing water on the edges of the fire, up to 15 crews of fire rangers on the ground using pumps and hoses and as well as heavy equipment that are working to build fire guards.”
The northbound lane of Highway 105 remains closed but traffic is flowing southbound.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but Provincial Police say foul play/arson isn’t suspected at this time.
