A bogus facebook page calling itself “Red Lake Fire Victims” has appeared in the last 24 hours and is spreading what can only be described as “Fake News.”
The page encourages evacuees to join to keep in contact with each other and is reposting stories from CKDR and various social media outlets.
At the same time, it has been ‘commenting’ on news stories posted to CKDR’s Facebook page as well as social media pages operated by media outlets.
A totally false comment on a CKDR story about the Red Lake Fire actually claimed the fire was Arson.
A second comment included a link to “TorontoToday” where an article claimed ‘officials’ said they were looking for four men seen with propane tanks. The article also claimed the Catholic Church had burned and featured a video of a church fire from the US.
(OPP in Red Lake confirm there is no foul play suspected nor has the RC Church burned down.)
“TorontoToday” also claims an Antifa attack on Highway 6 as well as a terrorist attack in Caledonia.
Visitors to “TorontoToday” are asked to download a file to enable the site to run as a Chrome Extension. The download is a .zip file and flagged as ‘dangerous.’
CKDR has reported “Toronto Today” as well as “Red Lake Fire Survivors.”
