The Ontario Provincial Police have closed their detachment in Emo.
Acting Sergeant Jim Davis says it was only serving as a place for officers to use when needed.
“It hasn’t had the ability to have prisoners lodged there, so it was used as an intermediate detachment between Fort Frances and Rainy River. It wasn’t serving as an actual attachment for us for quite some time,” says Davis.
Davis says new technology is now allowing officers to complete paperwork in their vehicle eliminating any real need for the building.
“We have mobile workstations in all of our vehicles now so we can actually park anywhere and do our paperwork these days. With the advent of newer technologies, we don’t have as much requirement to have that physical location anymore.”
Davis says the closure will have little impact on the public. Self-reporting of incidents can be done at detachments in Fort Frances or Rainy River or over the phone.
The building is also home to a Service Ontario location.
