Another invasive species is causing concern north of Kenora.
Flowering Rush is growing in the Minaki area.
Diane Schwartz-Williams from the Lake of the Woods District Stewardship Foundation says the plant is causing lots of problems.
“In a fairly large area, pretty much where-ever the water is less than 10 feet, close to the shore, it’s totally clogged up with Flowing Rush,” says Schwartz-Williams.
“There’s even some passageways between smaller islands that are blocked to boat traffic because it is so thick.”
Schwartz-Williams says the invasive plant also affects spawning areas for some fish like smallmouth bass.
She says the invasive plant was introduced about 40 years ago in the St. Lawrence Seaway and caused it to be dredged.
