Paul Daniel Sombrutski
April 1, 1979 – July 7, 2020
It is with sad and heavy hearts that we say goodbye. Paul (Pauly) Sombrutski, and in his high school days known as Pistol, will be missed by many. Paul grew up in Dryden. He spent his summers camping, fishing and playing sports. Ever the athlete, Paul excelled at football, basketball, soccer and baseball…he could throw a windmill pitch like nobody else. He once scored a goal during a soccer game on the opposing team, impressive, as he was the goalie for his own.
Paul was a fantastic chef and health food enthusiast. His culinary interest began around the tender age of six while reading the contents of a sugar rich cereal box and exclaiming out loud how horrible the ingredients were for everyone. He grew up to cook amazing gourmet meals for those that entered his kitchen…No preservatives added of course. Pauly cooked from scratch.
After high school, Pauly moved to Sudbury where he attended Laurentian University and worked in the culinary and service industry for 16 years. It was throughout this time that Paul’s most joyful experience occurred, and his son Connor was born. Paul cared deeply for family and he spoke of his adventures with Connor each day. Paul’s memory will live on through the many supports and connections that he made during his time in Sudbury.
Pauly was an avid reader, writer and lover of music. He made friends with everyone he met, and Paul’s sense of humour was second to nun. His appreciation for puns and jokes always added to his hysterical story telling abilities.
Pauly loved his family and friends and especially spending time with them in the outdoors. One of the only things he disliked was wearing socks, and he wore sandals everywhere he went…even in the middle of winter. But that was Paul, always doing his own thing, that is what made him awesome.
When Paul wasn’t cooking up something in the kitchen, he was outside. His connection to nature was an admirable one. He loved to tent, fish and explore. Pauly dreamed of building a cabin in the woods to grow old in. May we remember him in shorts and sandals in the middle of nowhere making us a delicacy over a campfire.
Pauly is survived by his son Connor, his partner Mars (Marja), his mother Elaine and father Bert, his brother Matthew (Ania), sisters Christine (Dan) and Tessa (Jamie) and his nieces: Sarah, Rebecca, Myla and Ela and his nephew Oliver. He will be missed by countless family members and friends. A small private celebration of life will be held to honour Paul’s memory.
