Thunder Bay is apologizing for the name and design of the mascot for its 50th anniversary celebrations.
The city says it received complaints that the mascot, a bird named Thunder, is too similar to the Thunderbird that’s sacred to Anishinaabe and other Indigenous cultures.
On Facebook, officials say it ran the concept past its Elders Council and Fort William First Nation Chief Peter Collins late last year and received no complaints.
They add the mascot will be renamed with the help of the community.
