Support for Legions struggling to stay alive because of COVID-19 shutdowns is on the radar of the federal government.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he understands Legions and other halls rely on rentals to stay open.
“There are smaller organizations, service organizations, and legions that function largely on a volunteer basis that get the revenue by renting out their halls for smaller events that haven’t been happening, that are going through a very difficult time right now.”
Trudeau says “We know that. We hear that. And we are working with the Minister of Veterans Affairs and other officials to try and ensure that we are supporting these organizations that are so important, not just for veterans, but for their communities as well.
A recent CTV report indicated 10% of legions in Canada would close permanently, while 30% are in dire straights because of the health crisis.
