The provincial government is pledging to keep the dialogue open with camp owners on how to support them during COVID-19 shutdowns.
Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries Lisa MacLeod says there’s no doubt the sector has been among the hardest hit by the pandemic.
“I think if you talk to the Tourism Industry Association. We’re looking at probably around 60% or even a bit more that have shuttered.”
MacLeod adds “We do estimate. We’ve taken a $20-billion hit in the province. 40% of visitor spending in the province of Ontario occurs this month right up until August. Obviously we want people travelling in their own communities and that’s going to be important moving forward.”
MacLeod says the government will continue to support outfitters and small business owners.
“Each one of these businesses wants to succeed. Whether that is your local neighbourhood pub or it is one of the nicest resorts in the entire province and everything in between. They want to succeed.”
She stresses “That’s why we are continuing to support them and that’s why we continue to consult with them to see what the path forward is. I’m looking forward to some of the very creative ideas that come forward to support these industries.”
MacLeod adds “It’s been very dark days but better days are to come.”
