It’s becoming more and more likely the Canada/U.S. border won’t be opening this month.
The current agreement to keep it closed expires on Sunday.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he met with the premier’s last Thursday and it’s clear everyone wants the current restrictions to remain in place.
“We will keep discussing with the United States administration on ways forward. But our priority on this is to ensure that we are keeping Canadians safe while continuing to ensure the essential flow of goods and services.”
Trudeau adds governments on both sides of the border must do a better job to ensure all jurisdictions are following the non-essential travel rules.
“As we continue our conversations with the Americans as we look at adjusting or shifting our posture in certain ways, we need to make sure that we are able to apply the rules consistently and that we’re doing everything necessary to keep Canadians safe.”
Trudeau says he’s aware several regions have been reporting an influx of American visitors in recent days.
