Some in-class instruction and training will soon resume in post-secondary institutions including Confederation College and Lakehead University.
Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities Ross Romano says limited in-person education will be offered for those who were unable to complete their studies or those needing to finish their practical courses.
“These students would be permitted into the program. We’re going to launch as of July 2nd because we need to give some lead time to the institutions to be able to obviously notify all of the students, the faculty, the staff and get ready to put the health and safety protocols in place.”
Romano says the move also allows for a smooth transition for students who will be continuing their studies.
“We would require approximately four weeks, hence July 2nd as the starting date, to be able to get ready. And then they would need up to 8 weeks to complete the programs of study as the worst case scenario.”
Romano says “the resumption of limited classroom instruction is beneficial and aimed at students in essential, frontline, and high labour market demand areas, such as nursing, personal support workers, engineering, and other critical professions.”
“Nursing students, who have a mere 12 hours left of hours that they must complete practicums in their campuses. And they would be working today.”
Romano notes in September, all students will have the opportunity to attend colleges and universities through virtual learning, in-class instruction, or hybrid formats.
