Canada Day festivities will look a whole lot different in Dryden this year because of COVID-19.
Activities won’t be held at Cooper Park, the Kinsmen Dragon Boat Races have been cancelled and the fireworks show has been postponed.
Manager of Community Services Steve Belanger says that doesn’t mean there won’t be fireworks at some point in time.
Dryden did receive $8,204 through Heritage Canada and that money can be used up to March 31, 2021.
Belanger says “So we do have some windows of opportunities there. Be it a holiday, be it the Christmas holiday’s, or even Winterfest, which of course the City of Dryden takes the lead on as well.”
Belanger stresses there will be events on July 1.
He says “A mobile music show that would basically see a transport bring a band around town and the goal is we are going to try and hit as many roads as we possibly can, or those that Public Works and the good staff over there can help us out and give us approvals.”
Belanger adds the goal is to avoid large clusters of people and ensure physical distancing by allowing residents to enjoy the show on their own property.
Another planned event is a family fishing challenge.
“Completely done through an App. Participants register on-line. They weigh their fish on-line. Take pictures. There’s absolutely zero contact. If we have prizes, which it looks like we will have participate prizes, they will be picked-up or delivered.”
Belanger notes they are working closely with Dryden Police, Provincial Police and the Northwestern Health Unit to carry out both events properly and safely.
Other proposed non-contact ideas include a Canada Day virtual or photo activity, Canadian trivia, colouring contests and dress up your boat, pets, window in Canadian fashion.
Additional community partners, event ideas, and feedback can be delivered through tourism@dryden.ca or by calling the Community Services office at 223-1425 ext. 5.
Councillor Shayne MacKinnon says he hopes residents and staff at Princess Court and Patricia Garden are included in Canada Day plans.
