Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says we cannot pretend racism does not exist here in Canada.
Trudeau says for far too many Canadians, images and stories coming out of the United States are all too familiar.
“Anti-black racism is real, unconscious bias is real, systemic discrimination is real and they happen here in Canada,” said Trudeau on Monday.
The prime minister’s comments come amid a series of protests following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week.
North of the border, thousands gathered across the country this weekend to join peaceful protests against anti-black racism.
Trudeau said by standing together, Canadians are sending the message that they will not tolerate injustice.
He also said he has a message for young black Canadians from coast to coast.
“I hear you when you say you are anxious and angry, when you say that this brings back painful experiences of racism that you’ve faced. I want you to know that I’m listening and that your government will always stand with you,” said Trudeau.
“Together, we will keep taking meaningful action to fight racism and discrimination in every form.”
