A number of area First Nations will benefit from a $200,000 donation from Newmont’s Musselwhite mine to fight COVID-19.
The company says $170,000 will bring food and other essential supplies to remote communities including Cat Lake, Kingfisher and North Caribou Lake.
The remaining $30,000 will be flowed through the United Way in Thunder Bay to provide food and support to seniors, as well as keeping crisis lines operational.
The mine has also temporarily stopped operations, out of concern expressed by First Nations leaders over the potential spread of the virus.
