So far our area has been relatively lucky in terms of COVID-19.
But the Acting Medical Officer of Health for the Northwestern Health Unit, Dr. Ian Gemmill says he’s opposed to opening up this region earlier than the rest of the province.
“I would be very worried at this point of time that if we went ahead with a separate plan for the north and then ended up discovering that we actually were in the middle of local transmission.”
Dr. Gemmill says he doesn’t want our region to be opened up early only to see a surge in coronavirus cases and us going back to square one.
He notes what we are doing now is working.
The number of positive cases in the catchment area remains at 16, with only one case in Atikokan not resolved.
838 tests have come back negative, while 410 test results are pending.
Premier Doug Ford hasn’t announced a firm date to start re-opening Ontario’s economy and has suggested we will all open at the same time.
