Even though the country is close to surpassing the 2,000 mark for COVID-19 related deaths, today is a good day.
That’s the message from Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Doctor Theresa Tam.
“There are still lots of unknowns, but the pace and expanse of evidence-based discovery and science innovation is inspiring,” says Tam, “…from discovery and genetic sequencing of the virus in January, to building our understanding of COVID-19 disease characteristics and spread.”
Canada’s top doctor says that includes researchers working across borders, virtual collaboration, and data available to everyone.
“It is hard to imagine where we’d be without this rapid and open sharing of research and scientific advancement on biomedical, social, and policy counter-measures.”
In addition to today being a good day, Tam says that the Prime Ministers’ announcements for research give hope for our future.
“In a world that is connected and united towards a goal, and with brain power that is funded, supported and trusted, we can reach a whole new level of capacity to respond to infectious disease threats both now and into the future.”
There are currently 40,813 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in Canada, with over 90% of all 620,000 plus tested coming back as clear of the virus.
