COVID-19 hasn’t slowed down fraudsters trying to bilk area residents out of money.
A number of scams have been circulating the area in recent days.
Individuals claiming to be from the Canadian Red Cross and other known charities have been offering free medical products for a donation, while there have been so-called government departments sending out coronavirus-themed phishing emails attempting to trick you to reveal sensitive personal and financial details.
Be aware of utility companies contacting you and threatening to disconnect your power for non-payment
E-mails have been received from Canada Revenue Agency asking you to visit a portal to receive a refund, while text messages have been received from Bell Canada asking you to hit a link to get money back.
Police warn to be extra careful right now and never give out personal information or respond to e-mail or text messages from anyone claiming to be from a government agency, charity or anyone you do not know.
Police are seeing various scenarios but most are the typical urgency and time sensitive circumstances that criminals place on individuals in order to receive personal and financial information.
