Officials in Sioux Lookout continue to look at all options to keep residents and staff safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Municipality has had to make the difficult decision to lay off 42 staff on a temporary basis.
Officials stress they hope the job action is short lived.
Measures have been put into place to support those impacted during this difficult time.
Mayor Doug Lawrance issued an update on the health crisis on the CKDR Morning Show today (Wednesday) and stressed all essential services continue.
“Workers keep the water flowing, collect garbage, maintain public works and keep the office running. Police, fire, by-law and ambulance services continue to keep us safe.”
Lawrance says the health and well-being of everyone is of paramount importance to the Municipality and its businesses.
“Grateful for the business sector who are innovating to keep us and their staff safe as we get groceries, fill prescriptions and purchase other essentials. We are grateful for all those carrying on work in essential services for vulnerable people who continue to need support.”
Lawrance stresses a coordinated community effort has helped stop the spread of the virus.
He notes they monitor the situation on a daily basis.
Lawrance is looking at the positives coming out of this.
“The value of investments in health care and public health systems are now clear to see. We are grateful for the responses to this crisis from both the federal and provincial governments. We will come through this difficult time and as we do we are learning. We will be well informed to make improvements to our systems.”
