The Mayor of Sioux Lookout stresses all essential services will continue to be offered during their municipal COVID-19 State of Emergency.
Doug Lawrance says the declaration opens the door to federal and provincial funding.
Lawrance notes residents will see some change in services for an indefinite period of time.
Lawrance says the cornavirus is impacting staffing levels.
He notes a number of municipal employees are able to work from home but admits they are now trying to manage a balancing act between compassion and retention of staff and long term financial impacts.
He says decisions and discussions will take place over the course of this week.
Lawrance says Council will also discuss this week possible ways to help small businesses impacted by forced closures or downtime.
“We are convening regular/weekly meetings. Information sharing with various groups and agencies which include the Chamber of Commerce. Our finger is on that pulse. Decisions will be forthcoming. As everyone knows the situation changes daily and how long it lasts we are unsure at this time.”
Meantime, Sioux Lookout is living up to its reputation as the “Hub of the North”.
Doug Lawrance says they will continue to serve remote First Nations at the municipal airport during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are developing enhanced screening. We are working with partners to see how we can do that. Our airport manager is in communication with NAV Canada and other agencies and also working closely with First Nation agencies.”
Lastly, Lawrance is thanking all essential workers for their time, commitment and passion.
