It’s not just seniors and those with pre-existing who need to be concerned about COVID-19.
That’s the message from Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, who explains that not even the young and fit are immune from the virus.
“Adults under 40 account for ten percent of hospitalizations,” says Dr. Tam, “And just yesterday, there was the first report of an individual in their 30’s who died of COVID-19.”
She explains though, at the moment, the greatest concern is the introduction and spread of the virus into enclosed settings where vulnerable people live.
“We currently have a number of on-going outbreaks in long-term care homes, cases in First Nations, as well as in a corrections facility,” Dr. Tam notes.
Dr. Tam says that as of this morning, there were 7,708 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 89 deaths.
While more than 93 percent of the over 236,000 COVID-19 tests have come back negative, Canada’s top doctor says we all need to continue to do our part and stay home.
