The Minister of Energy says a new electricity rebate program could be continued after the established 45 days.
Greg Rickford says it’s all part of the government’s plan to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Kenora-Rainy River MPP says they didn’t want to extend the lower electricity rates too far in the future because they don’t know how long the current situation will be going on.
Rickford says they are willing to re-visit the issue closer to the end of the program.
“The Premier has said we will spare no expense to make sure families, small businesses, farmers have relief.”
The total cost of cheaper hydro will cost the Ontario government $160 million.
Rickford adds “Everything remains fluid right now. We believe that our Ontario action plan will make sure that the people of Ontario are protected in the best position possible. Not only to deal with these extenuating circumstances but somewhere down the road to help us with our recovery.”
