The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is glad the provincial government has backed-off on mandatory E-learning.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce has indicated e-learning courses would not be a requirement for graduation.
Board Chair Cecile Marcino says the practice is a challenge for most of their students.
“We’ve seen kids who are 90%-98% averages who struggled with E-learning in the past and they the supports here in the North.”
Marcino notes “The graduation rate is going down because it’s (E-learning) being tied to the kids. They have to take it. They need the supports throughout the grade levels before they hit 11 and 12 to be able to learn how to do E-learning. Because you just can’t throw a child in and expect them to know what their doing if they have never done it before.”
Marcino is asking the Minister of Education to visit their school board to see first hand some of the barriers and opportunities in their system.
She points to the high number of special needs students within the board who won’t benefit from changes to the school system.
