The City of Dryden says the cancellation of the Northern Bands Hockey Tournament is unfortunate for all involved but is very understandable given the COVID-19 concerns and the effects the virus could have in all of our communities.
The event featuring more than 40 First Nations teams from across the region has been shelved for this year but is still planned for March of next year.
Dryden Chief Administrative Officer Roger Nesbitt says their primary concern is for the safety of the public and their employees.
Manager of Community Services Steve Belanger says “The health and safety of our patrons including our visitors from neighbouring communities is of upmost importance as we enjoy our recreational facilities. Additional measures have been implemented at the Dryden Recreation Centre to assist users in maintaining good hygiene practices. Facility staff have increased efforts to ensure common public surfaces are regularly disinfected and we encourage all patrons to be prudent and disinfectant hands regularly while utilizing facilities.
Belanger says the tournament generally brings in more than $32,000 in revenue for the Arena but notes businesses, the snack bar, employees and hotels are impacted financially.
