A provincial police watchdog is out with its report card on the recommendations it made after calling out the Thunder Bay Police Service for systemic racism.
Former interim director of the Ontario Independent Police Review Director, Sylvana Capogreco says she is encouraged by the amount of work done in one year.
“Starting with the acknowledgment in January of last year that racism does exist. I think that was a good first step.”
Capogreco says she’s encouraged by the dialogue and the Chief turning to the board to ask for more funding to implement some of the recommendations.
She says “They have made attempts to implement a number of them. The terms of reference for the re-investigation of the nine sudden deaths that were problematic. That is underway and it appears to be a very robust progress.”
