The Ontario Human Rights Commission has brought its ‘Right To Read’ campaign to northwestern Ontario.
Public inquiries were held this week in Kenora and Thunder Bay.
Keith Gray is from Dyslexia Canada and says these consultations are needed.
“Amazing how many parents are coming out saying and just amazing tears because they’re not getting help from the schools. They’re not getting help for their children and their children need help. They know their children aren’t stupid.”
Gray stresses “In Ontario we doesn’t recognize the word “Dyslexia”. We don’t recognize that it exists. Other countries in the world are very, very prominent in helping children.”
He notes says they are lobbying with the Ministry of Education to make a change in curriculum to help children with reading difficulties, stating he feels bad for teachers right now.
The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board and the Lakehead Board have been singled out for the campaign.
