The Special Olympic National Winter Games are underway in Thunder Bay.
The torch was lit during the Opening Ceremony held at the Fort William Gardens Tuesday night.
Governor General Julie Payette officially declared the games open by praising all of the athletes in competition.
“I was so impressed. Not only by your performances, by your determination, but by your sheer talent and your passion for your sport. It’s contagious and it’s so impressive.”
Games Chair Barry Streib says all of the preparation has led to this week’s event, bringing over 1,200 athletes, coaches, and staff from across Canada to the Lakehead.
“And the real thing that we noticed was the excitement level of the athletes who just want to get started and compete and get out there and have some fun.”
Twelve Special Olympics teams are competing in eight sports.
