Confederation College is pleased the provincial government has opened the door to allow colleges to offer their own nursing degree program.
However, school president Kathleen Lynch suggests it’s too early to know the local impact.
“We haven’t decided yet what we are going to be doing. Right now we are in a partnership with Lakehead University in the region where we offer the four year degree program. So obviously we need to talk to them about the future and what opportunities exist.”
Lynch says the immediate goal is to get more recognition for the practical nurses who graduate from their program.
However, Lynch notes many of the small communities in the northwest are looking for degree nurses and this gives them the opportunity to meet that need.
She calls the announcement a great day for colleges and nurses across Ontario.
