Ontario colleges will soon be able to offer four-year nursing degree programs without partnering with a university.
Currently, colleges need to partner with a university to offer the course.
Minister of Colleges and Universities Ross Romano says the change will allow students to stay home for the entire length of their degree, which in turn should help them stay in their community once they graduate and join the work force.
Romano notes the move has been a long time coming.
“It was in the year 2000 that the collaborative nursing program was born. That was a time when colleges did not offer degrees. One year later that changed and once the question was poised to me, I saw no reason why a college should not be in a position to offer a stand-alone degree.”
