The Township of Ignace has gained a high profile ally in its bid to secure an underground nuclear repository.
The Kenora District Municipal Association has approved a resolution supporting the communities pursuit of the deep-earth project.
Marshalina Reader is the Chief Administrative Officer in Ignace and she says the entire region will benefit if they are selected.
Reader says they don’t have capacity to meet all of the demands that will be created by 2,500 plus jobs but if they can form meaningful partners the project will be a success.
She adds “We’ve been successful in partnering with Dryden, Machin, Pickle Lake, Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation in developing our community safety and well-being plan. So I see that as really an organic way that we’ve been able to connect with each other and partner because we’re addressing serious issues for all of our communities.”
Ignace is one of two communities in Ontario in line for the nuclear waste repository, but a final decision isn’t expected for three more years.
