Provincial Police are reporting a new scam that’s started to make the rounds locally.
It’s being called the “port out” scam.
Fraudsters are impersonating you by claiming your cell phone has been stolen so that they can get a new SIM card and cell phone from your provider.
They then download popular apps, and since they now have your cell phone number and potentially email account they can simply hit forgot password to take over your various accounts.
To protect yourself, the OPP says it’s not as simple as just not posting your birthday on social media.
They say that you shouldn’t answer phishing emails or texts asking for passwords, and they recommend using an offline password manager.
