Machin Mayor Gord Griffiths is asking for provincial help to address two major concerns in his community.
Griffiths led a delegation at a pre-budget consultation held in Kenora earlier this week.
During his presentation, one of the things he asked for was help paying for some hydro costs.
“You want to keep your recreation centres open but the hydro cost, especially for an arena, is the big one. We do have our ice plant on a separate metre, we’re watching the numbers and they keep climbing and climbing.”
Another ask from Griffiths was help for repairing their gravel roads, which were hit hard by last year’s flooding.
“The costs that we have to maintain the 78 kilometres of gravel roads that we have, we have a lot of ditching that needs to be done. There’s so much work and we just don’t have the tax base to do it. We’re always looking for additional help to try and deal with that.”
Griffiths says he appreciated the platform offered by the government.
“It’s nice when they get out of Toronto and actually come here and listen to you. You can write stuff on paper (and) they can read it, but if they hear it in person, I think it’s so much more valuable.”
