The minority government will be pressed in the coming months on keeping its promise to help twin Highway 17 west of Kenora.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Conservative MP Eric Melillo stressed the project must become a top priority.
“This is a local issue for us but it is a national issue. When there is a crash on the Trans-Canada Highway in my riding, our entire economy shuts down. Our country is literally split into two.”
Melillo adds “Highway conditions are notoriously dangerous so this project is tremendously important for the safety of all travellers. The construction will also reduce barriers to economic activity in the region and allow for further future development.”
Funding for the project was announced in 2009, but construction has yet to start.
