A by-law to ban plastic shopping bags is now in place in Fort Frances.
Town council gave unanimous approval at their meeting Monday night.
It doesn’t come into effect until 2021, however, no fines will be issued until a year later, allowing businesses to exhaust existing supplies and get used to the new rules.
The by-law also prohibits food containers and beverage cups containing foam material.
Fort Frances is the only Ontario community with such a by-law in place.
Sioux Lookout and Geraldton had plastic bag bans but lifted them several years ago.
