A Wabigoon man is on the receiving end of a coveted Commissioner’s Citation for Bravery.
Lorne Mitchell received the honour at a special ceremony this week in Wabigoon.
Mitchell contacted police about a woman, armed with a knife, stabbing a man, which resulted in him being stabbed five times by the assailant.
OPP Staff Sergeant Ed Chwastyk says the award is “given in situations where individuals knowingly put themselves at great risk, during protection of life or property. And it must involve a threat of serious bodily harm or death with imminent danger or taking extra effort to save a life.”
Chwastyk stresses communities need people like Mitchell who’ll step up and help police know when serious things happen.
Mitchell calls the ceremony and the award “overwhelming”, noting he didn’t expect the huge turnout.
He says it’s a day he will remember for the rest of his life.
