The prime minister is confirming reports Iran may have mistakenly shot down that Ukrainian jet near Tehran.
The crash Wednesday killed 176 people including 63 Canadians.
Justin Trudeau says the news will come as a further shock to those who are already grieving, “we have intelligence from multiple sources, including our allies and our own intelligence, the evidence indicates the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface to air missile. This may well have been unintentional.”
The prime minister indicates the investigation into the tragedy is ongoing.
The Boeing 737-800 crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran on its way to Kyiv where 138 passengers had connecting flights to Toronto.
Trudeau says Canada has been in touch with Iran to demand our government be allowed into that country to participate in the investigation.
