Kenora MP Eric Melillo is pushing for federal money for an addictions treatment centre in Mishkeegogamang First Nation.
Melillo says funding for the proposal would be a worthwhile investment in the health and long-term prosperity of the community.
The Conservative member says “This project has my full support, and I am calling on the government to provide the funds needed to proceed to the next step.”
Melillo notes “Like many communities across Canada, the riding of Kenora has been impacted by the opiate crisis.”
He adds “Over decades of providing addictions treatment to its residents, Mishkeegogamang First Nation has developed successful programs with an emphasis on traditional teachings. A permanent treatment centre would provide stability and allow them to administer their proven programs under one roof.”
Melillo dropped off letters of support to Minister of Health Patty Hajdu and Minister of Indigenous Services Marc Miller yesterday. (Tuesday)
Mishkeegogamang, otherwise known as New Osnaburgh First Nation, is located just south of Pickle Lake.
