Today (Monday, December 2nd) marks the beginning of five new super health agencies in the province designed to improve the system and end hallway medicine.
Health Minister Christine Elliott points out the Ontario Health Teams will get patients the care they need at the right place, which includes at home.
“The hospital isn’t always the best place for a patient to receive care. And I say this especially at a time when many of our hospitals are experiencing over 100% capacity.”
Elliott says the change brings together all health care providers under one umbrella.
“Hospitals working with home care as a single team can begin to plan for and coordinate a patients return home as soon as their actually admitted to hospital.”
Elliott notes the transformation will be done in part with government funding.
“By investing $27 billion over ten years in hospital infrastructure projects. Building more long term care beds and increasing community based services.”
The Northwest body will be located in Thunder Bay, headed by local health authority Rhonda Crocker Ellacott.
