Two area programs are big winners in the Tbaytel for Good Community Fund campaign.
The Makwa Clan in Sioux Lookout and The Borrowing Cupboard in Kenora are both getting $5,000 based on the number of votes they received in on-line voting.
The Makwa Clan will patrol the streets to assist people who are in need.
The goal is to make the community safer, reduce crime, as well as enhance everyone’s mental and physical well-being.
It’s being organized by the Equaywuk Women’s Group and the Municipality of Sioux Lookout Police Services Board.
The money will be used to purchase equipment and supplies to enhance the well-being of all citizens in Sioux Lookout.
The Borrowing Cupboard is a non-profit organization that supports the needs of disabled individuals in the Lake of the Woods Area.
It operates out of the hospital and is a place where people can donate, borrow or exchange mobility aid equipment.
The funding will cover overhead and equipment costs while kick-starting a new business model this year.
The St. Martin School-Mustangs’ Blessing Cupboard in Thunder Bay and the Grub Tub Snack Program in Thunder Bay received money in the $1,500 funding level.
Dryden’s Maureen Caul and Michele Williams with the Girls Night Out for the Girls event are receiving $500 to purchase supplies for chemotherapy care bags for their annual fundraiser.
The Till the Beds are Made project in Shuniah also received $500.
Tbaytel handed out a total of $14,000 to community projects.
The 10 semi-finalists in the $1,500 and $5,000 categories received a combined total of 189,239 votes.
