The economic well-being of six northern Ontario First Nation communities has gained the attention of the provincial government.
Indigenous Affairs Minister Greg Rickford revealed to the Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief’s assembly Wednesday in Thunder Bay what the over half a million dollars will do.
“This funding will support everything from business start ups, to new co-op stores, to laying the ground work for new fibre optic networks, to starting the planning for a new multi-purpose community centre.”
Some of the communities include Fort Albany, who will develop entrepreneurial skills, Moose Creek and Webeque First Nation.
There is gratitude from the Nishnawbe Aski Nation to the province.
Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler noted the assistance will have its spin offs.
“Especially when we have big projects, like Watay power, a $1.6-billion project that is moving forward. We need to have our communities participate in that economy.”
