The Ford government has voted against a private member’s bill aimed at making northern Ontario highways safer.
The legislation didn’t pass second reading this past week at Queen’s Park as the motion was defeated 59-38.
Kenora-Rainy River MPP and Northern Development Minister Greg Rickford wasn’t in attendance as he was in Thunder Bay for meetings.
The bill, introduced by NDP MPP Guy Bourgouin, sought to improve winter highway maintenance on Highways 17 and 11 in order to reduce the number of closures and collisions.
Bourgouin says the Ford Conservative government has shamelessly put a price on the lives of people that tragically die and get injured on northern Ontario highways every year.
He stresses “While the Liberals privatized and de-regulated winter highway maintenance, Doug Ford’s Conservatives are taking us from bad to worse by voting down a bill that could have improved the quality of our roads, and saved lives.
This is what @OntarioPCParty MPPs said about making Northern highways safer:@VijayThaniMPP: “it would be premature to pass this bill…”@Aris_Babikian: “this bill…would cost taxpayers a great deal of money, without substantial benefits.”#onpoli https://t.co/xqCzY8npj1
