The provincial government is committed to action to address Treaty concerns among Indigenous leaders.
Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa says the government is not doing enough to honour Treaty rights.
Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey agrees there should be a level of respect and we should be coming to an agreement on some of the fundamental challenges.
However, he stresses it’s not just a piece of paper and not just a discussion.
“It’s about action coming out of that. That is why the Minister of Indigenous Affairs and myself were in Kenora recently talking about the Justice Centres. Standing with Treaty 3, Chief Fiddler, NAN, talking about the important work that we need to do with First Nations.”
Downey says it’s a team effort and they need the Federal government on board as well.
He says it’s important to “Actualize the agreements that we have. To make sure that their having an impact in the communities where they need to. I am pleased to work with the member (Sol Mamakwa) on issues as they arise to make sure that we are taking action, where action is needed.”
