There are concerns surrounding the circumstances of a suspected suicide of a 19 year old Indigenous man on the Lakehead University grounds in Thunder Bay.
Ontario Chief Coroner Dr. Dirk Huyer will be investigating the September death following accusations the man was just released from the Regional Health Sciences Centre.
“I am confirming that we’re involved and anytime any death occurs tragically, we are involved automatically at the start.”
Huyer says “Our hope is to learn the full understanding of the circumstances of the death and then is there anything that we may identify during that investigation that may raise an issue.”
Hospital officials say an internal investigation of the September incident concluded appropriate actions were taken and the right decisions were made by clinical staff based on the information provided to them and the patient’s presentation.
