The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is asking deer hunters for samples of their harvest.
The Ministry is looking for signs of chronic wasting disease.
Officials are really interested in deer harvested from management units 8 and 9A in the Dryden and Dinorwic area as well as 9B and 10 in the Rainy River district.
The Ministry says it has been checking animals for the disease since 2003 but has yet to find any signs in northwestern Ontario.
It has been detected in Minnesota and Quebec.
