New legislation has been put forward to protect animals from abuse and neglect.
The Animal Welfare Services Act will create new offences to combat dog fighting, give stronger powers for inspectors and establish higher penalties.
Solicitor General Sylvia Jones says a provincially-appointed inspector position will also be created.
Jones says that individual will work with inspectors across Ontario to ensure everyone is properly and consistently trained.
She notes “the province will update prohibitions. For example, not allowing dog fighting equipment to be returned to their owners. Have inspectors partner with local police on criminal investigations.”
The legislation is expected to come into force in the new year.
Jones says the new rules will be strictest in all of Canada.
