The Nuclear Waste Management Organization continues to look at Ignace as a potential host site for an underground nuclear repository.
The community is one of five in the running in Ontario.
Other areas in the final grouping include Hornepayne, Manitouwadge, Huron-Kinloss and South Bruce
Spokesperson Bradley Hammond says “We have been able to move forward with some initial borehole drilling. We now in that area successfully drilled two boreholes. Boreholes are really important to give us additional geo-technical information, information about what the rock’s like at potential repository depth.”
A third borehole drilling program is planned for the Ignace area.
Hammond says that will help them complete the puzzle.
“This information is put together in aggregate, along with all the other geo-technical information, social information that we get through the on-going site selection process. And when we put that together we end up with the information we need to help to help with making the ultimate site selection decisions down the road.
A final decision isn’t expected until 2023.
Hammond spoke to CKDR News Director Mike Ebbeling during a recent media tour of the Bruce Nuclear Power facility near Kincardine.
