The legalization of edible cannabis today (Thursday, October 17th) in Canada is causing Ontario’s health minister to watch with concern.
Christine Elliott addressed the issue in Thunder Bay.
She adds legalized marijuana was a federal government idea, with no implantation plan, that fell on the province’s lap to deal with.
“I think that we have seen and heard of situations where children have ingested them (edible cannabis) and gotten very ill. So I think that we really need to make sure that we’re going to be able to provide the care around them and make sure the public is aware.”
Elliott is also seeking answers far and wide from health care providers and young people on the health impacts of vaping.
She says her search also includes American health agencies, which are telling her what they’re discovering.
“Seem to be suggesting that there are a lot of other materials that are being used along with traditional vaping inhalers, but we don’t know exactly what’s going on in Ontario yet.”
Elliott says she’s been told there are more respiratory health problems among the population that haven’t reached hospitals yet.
