Provincial Police in Red Lake are issuing a warning of scammers targeting area residents.
A number of individuals have been receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency or the local law enforcement agency asking for personal information.
OPP say the scam artist threatens to transfer the target to an officer from Red Lake OPP, whom they identify as Officer Marshall.
While police say Revenue Canada may at times call by phone, there are certain things they will never do.
That includes asking for information about your passport, health card or driver’s license.
Police add the CRA will never ask for payment by credit card, gift certificate or Internet, or use aggressive language threatening to arrest you, or leave threatening messages demanding payment.
If you have received this kind of phone call, you should contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit their website at http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm.
