Ignace High School is being unfairly punished by the Keewatin Patricia District School Board.
That’s the feeling of Jeff Lederer and his wife Tanya.
They spoke before trustees last week, complaining about the lack of teachers at the secondary level.
The school was hit hardest in the most recent budget cuts by the public school board.
Lederer says “We weren’t told anything, which was really upsetting because we have a son that’s going into Grade 11. He wants to be a Nurse Practitioner eventually, so we have to make sure that he has the schooling that he needs. And I know that competition is really fierce now in University and College.”
“It’s not about enrolment because they were advocating in the media that there were only 39 students enrolled, now there are 48”.
Lederer notes “So in small communities, 10 students make a big difference. The province says maintain a 28 to 1 ratio, but that doesn’t happen in northern Ontario.”
Acting Director of Education Caryl Hron says they still have four teachers for 48 students.
Lederer feels that some students in the area are being treated as “second class citizens.”
