It’s business as usual at all Ontario schools.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees, the province and the Council of Trustees’ Associations emerged Sunday night with a tentative deal for thousands of education workers who were poised to walk off the job today. (Monday, October 7th)
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says “all parties bargained in good faith late into the night and over the weekend to reach a deal that is fair and that is reasonable and I am pleased that students will be back in the class.
Lecce adds “This is most welcome news for families and students and workers alike that schools will remain open across our province.”
The contract still needs to be ratified by the membership.
Meantime, the leader of the provincial NDP says although school closures and disruptions have been avoided, it’s clear that Doug Ford’s devastating education cuts are hurting kids in classrooms.
Andrea Horwath says it was an unnecessary weekend of stress for parents and students.
Horwath stresses more than ever, Ontarians recognize the importance of the education system and the vital role education workers play.
She notes as long as the deep Conservative cuts continue, Ontario can expect more chaos in the classrooms.
